Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday extended greetings to the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) on its 64th Raising Day, commending the force for its unwavering dedication, courage, and humanitarian service in protecting the nation’s frontiers.
In a post on X, the Prime Minister said, “Warm greetings to all ITBP Himveers and their families on their Raising Day. The Force embodies unmatched courage, discipline, and devotion to duty.”
He added that the ITBP personnel serve in some of the harshest terrains and climates while safeguarding the nation with steadfast resolve. Their compassion and commitment during disaster relief and rescue operations, he noted, reflect the finest traditions of service and humanity.
Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan also conveyed his greetings to the force, describing ITBP personnel as the first line of defence along India’s Himalayan borders. “Since its inception, ITBP has exemplified courage, discipline, and unwavering commitment to safeguarding our nation’s borders and people,” he said in his message on X.
Raised on October 24, 1962, the Indo-Tibetan Border Police guards the 3,488 km-long India-China border, stretching from the Karakoram Pass in Ladakh to Jachep La in Arunachal Pradesh. The force also plays a crucial role in internal security operations, including anti-Naxal duties in Chhattisgarh.
Many of the ITBP’s Border Out Posts are located at altitudes between 9,000 and 18,800 feet, where temperatures can plummet to minus 45 degrees Celsius during winters.
Recognised as a specialised armed police force, the ITBP trains its personnel in mountaineering, skiing, and tactical combat, in addition to maintaining readiness for disaster response and relief operations in the Himalayan region. Over the years, the force has conducted numerous rescue missions, providing timely assistance to citizens affected by natural calamities.
