The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) on Tuesday suspended Paris Olympics bronze medallist Aman Sehrawat for one year after the 22-year-old exceeded the 57kg weight limit at the World Championships in Zagreb, Croatia, last month.
The suspension, effective from September 23, bars Sehrawat from participating in any wrestling-related activities, both nationally and internationally, until September 2026. WFI President Sanjay Singh said the wrestler’s response to a disciplinary notice was “unsatisfactory.”
“Sehrawat’s coaching staff have also been issued formal warnings. The wrestler was given a one-week window to respond before final action was taken,” Singh told IANS.
The disciplinary committee noted that Sehrawat joined the preparatory camp in Porec, Croatia, 18 days before his scheduled bout on September 14, giving him sufficient time to maintain weight and fitness levels in line with regulations.
This is the third disciplinary action involving an Indian wrestler in the past year, after Vinesh Phogat withdrew from the Paris 2024 Olympics and Neha Sangwan was disqualified at the 2025 World Under-20 Championships over weight and fitness issues.
The one-year ban may affect Sehrawat’s preparations for the 2026 Asian Games, scheduled from September 30 to October 3, unless the WFI revises its decision.
