Phase-2 expansion of Pune Metro

Cabinet approves Phase-2 expansion of Pune Metro; new corridors to boost connectivity across city

The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved two major corridors under Phase-2 of the Pune Metro Rail Project, giving a significant push to the city’s public transport infrastructure. The decision, taken at a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, clears project Line 4 (Kharadi–Hadapsar–Swargate–Khadakwasla) and Line 4A (Nal Stop–Warje–Manik Baug).

Together, the two lines will span 31.636 km with 28 elevated stations, connecting key IT zones, commercial hubs, industrial clusters and dense residential pockets across East, South and West Pune. The project, estimated to cost ₹9,857.85 crore, will be jointly funded by the Centre, the Maharashtra government and international lending agencies. The construction is expected to be completed within five years.

Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs said the new corridors will integrate seamlessly with existing and sanctioned routes at Kharadi Bypass, Nal Stop and Swargate, apart from providing an interchange with Hadapsar Railway Station. The expansion also links future corridors toward Loni Kalbhor and Saswad Road, strengthening multimodal connectivity across metro, rail and bus networks.

Traversing major arteries including Solapur Road, Magarpatta Road, Sinhagad Road, Karve Road and the Mumbai–Bengaluru Highway, the lines are expected to significantly reduce congestion on Pune’s busiest routes and promote sustainable urban mobility.

Ridership estimates show strong long-term growth. Daily footfall on Lines 4 and 4A together is projected at 4.09 lakh in 2028 and over 11.7 lakh by 2058. The Kharadi–Khadakwasla corridor alone is expected to handle 3.23 lakh passengers in 2028, rising to 9.33 lakh by 2058, while the Nal Stop–Warje–Manik Baug spur line is projected to grow from 85,555 to 2.41 lakh passengers over the same period.

Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro) will execute the project, with pre-construction work, including topographical surveys and design studies, already underway.

With this approval, the Pune Metro network is set to cross the 100-km mark, marking a major step toward building a modern, integrated and environmentally sustainable transit system. Officials said the new corridors will save commuting time, cut traffic congestion and provide a safe and affordable travel option — emerging as key lifelines for the city in the years to come.
