Cold wave conditions to persist over parts of MP and Chhattisgarh; heavy rains likely over southern states

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that cold wave conditions are likely to continue over parts of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh till November 16, even as southern states brace for another spell of heavy rainfall.

The IMD said that cold to severe cold wave conditions are likely to prevail over western Madhya Pradesh on November 13 and 14, extending to isolated pockets of eastern Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh through November 16. The mercury has dropped significantly across central India, with Rajgarh in Madhya Pradesh recording the lowest minimum temperature of 7.4°C. Minimum temperatures between 7°C and 10°C were reported in parts of Jammu region, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and northern Uttar Pradesh.

In the past 24 hours, cold wave to severe cold wave conditions prevailed in several parts of Chhattisgarh and isolated areas of Madhya Pradesh. Temperatures were below normal in many parts of eastern Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Vidarbha, and Chhattisgarh. Cold wave conditions were also reported across central and northwestern India.

Meanwhile, heavy rainfall (up to 11 cm) was recorded at isolated places in Tamil Nadu. The IMD forecast indicates that isolated heavy rainfall is very likely over Tamil Nadu on November 13 and again between November 16 and 18. Kerala and Mahe are also expected to receive heavy rainfall on November 13 and from November 17 to 19, while coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, and Rayalaseema are likely to experience heavy showers between November 17 and 19.

Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are expected over Tamil Nadu on November 13, 16, and 17; over Kerala and Mahe on November 13, 14, and 17; and over coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, and Rayalaseema on November 16 and 17.

The IMD attributed the rainfall activity to multiple weather systems – a cyclonic circulation over the southwest and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal, another over southeast Bangladesh and its neighbourhood, and a weak western disturbance over Kashmir. These systems are expected to influence weather conditions across southern and eastern India in the coming days.

Fog conditions were observed in several parts of north and northeast India on Thursday morning. Shallow fog occurred at a few places over Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi, and at isolated places over Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Bihar, eastern Uttar Pradesh, and western Madhya Pradesh. The IMD said shallow to moderate fog is likely to persist over northeastern states and Uttar Pradesh during the next five days.

No major change in minimum temperatures is expected over western India during the next three days, but a fall of two to three degrees Celsius is likely thereafter in north Madhya Maharashtra. The rest of the country is expected to see stable temperature conditions during the forecast period.

In Delhi-NCR, the weather remained mainly clear with mist and haze during the night hours. Maximum temperatures ranged between 25°C and 27°C, which is one to two degrees below normal, while the minimum hovered between 10°C and 12°C. Shallow fog was reported in the morning at Safdarjung and Palam airports, but the visibility improved after 9 a.m.

The IMD has predicted mainly clear skies with shallow fog in the morning hours for Delhi between November 14 and 16. Daytime temperatures are expected to remain between 24°C and 26°C, with minimum temperatures dipping to 8°C-10°C by November 16. Winds will predominantly blow from the northwest at speeds of up to 15-20 kmph in the afternoon, decreasing to below 10 kmph during evening and night hours.

Overall, Delhi-NCR is set to experience cool, clear, and slightly hazy conditions in the coming days, while central India remains under a cold wave and the southern peninsula braces for another round of heavy rains.
