Cold wave grips central India; heavy rain forecast for Tamil Nadu and Kerala

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday said that cold wave conditions are likely to continue across parts of western Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Rajasthan until November 15. The weather agency also predicted isolated heavy rainfall over Tamil Nadu on Wednesday and over Kerala and Mahe on November 12 and 13.

Over the next few days, light to moderate rain and thunderstorms are likely in many parts of southern India. Tamil Nadu is expected to experience isolated heavy showers on November 12, 17, and 18, while Kerala and Mahe will receive heavy rainfall on November 12 and 13. Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, and Rayalaseema are likely to see heavy rainfall on November 17 and 18. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are also forecast over Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Mahe, and parts of Karnataka during next 7 days.

The IMD has warned that cold wave to severe cold wave conditions will continue over parts of western Madhya Pradesh from November 12 to 13, while other areas in central and northwestern India may also experience below-normal temperatures.

In the past 24 hours (ending at 8:30 a.m. on November 12), heavy to very heavy rainfall, between 7 cm and 20 cm, was recorded at isolated locations in Tamil Nadu, while parts of Kerala saw heavy rainfall. Cold wave conditions prevailed in pockets of Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and eastern Rajasthan, with temperatures remaining appreciably below normal across much of northwest and central India. Dense fog was observed in parts of Odisha, with moderate to shallow fog reported from Himachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi.

In Delhi-NCR, weather conditions are expected to remain mainly clear between November 12 and 15, with mist or shallow fog during morning and night hours. The maximum temperature will hover around 24°C to 28°C, while minimum temperatures are likely to range between 9°C and 12°C.

Northwesterly winds will dominate the region, with speeds varying from 5 to 20 kmph during the day and becoming lighter at night. Visibility may reduce during early morning hours due to fog and haze.
