Cold wave to grip central and northern India; heavy rain likely over southern states

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday forecast cold wave to severe cold wave conditions over several parts of central and northern India during the next few days, while isolated heavy rainfall is expected over southern states, including Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

According to the IMD, cold wave to severe cold wave conditions are very likely to prevail in isolated pockets of western Madhya Pradesh from November 10 to 12. Cold wave conditions are also likely in parts of Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh during November 10–12; eastern Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh during November 10–14; Vidarbha on November 12 and 13; and Jharkhand and Odisha on November 11 and 12. Minimum temperatures in northwest India are expected to remain below normal by 2-3°C during the period.

In the past 24 hours, cold wave to severe cold wave conditions were reported in isolated areas of western Madhya Pradesh and eastern Rajasthan, while cold wave conditions prevailed in parts of Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh.

Meanwhile, the southern parts of the country are likely to experience heavy rainfall due to multiple weather systems over the Bay of Bengal and southern peninsula. An upper air cyclonic circulation lies over the central Bay of Bengal, another over south Bangladesh and neighbourhood, and one more over north interior Tamil Nadu.

Under their influence, light to moderate rain or thunderstorms are expected at many places, with isolated heavy rainfall over Tamil Nadu on November 12 and 13, over Kerala and Mahe on November 10 and 11, and over Lakshadweep on November 10. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are also likely over Tamil Nadu during November 10-14 and over Kerala, Mahe, and Lakshadweep on November 10 and 11.

In the 24 hours (ending at 8:30 a.m. on November 10), Kerala recorded heavy rainfall, with Neyyattinkara in Thiruvananthapuram district receiving 11 cm, Thiruvananthapuram city 3 cm, and Pirappancode 2 cm. In Tamil Nadu, Kuzhithurai in Kanyakumari district received 4 cm, while Pamban, Adayamadai, and Mullanginavillai recorded 3 cm each.

For Delhi-NCR, the IMD has predicted mainly clear skies and mist or haze during the mornings from November 10 to 13. Maximum temperatures are expected to remain between 26°C and 29°C, and minimum temperatures between 9°C and 12°C, which are 2-4°C below normal for the season. Winds will predominantly blow from the northwest direction, with speeds varying between 10 and 20 kmph during the day and dropping below 10 kmph at night.

The IMD has advised people in affected regions to take necessary precautions against cold wave conditions and has alerted residents of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Lakshadweep to possible heavy rainfall and thunderstorms in the coming days.
