Japan, the Country Focus at the 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI), drew significant attention on Day 4 as the cast and crew of its two featured films — Tiger and Seaside Serendipity — interacted with the media at a specially organised press conference. The filmmakers discussed their creative journeys, thematic inspirations and the experience of representing Japan on an international stage, adding depth to this year’s Country Focus showcase.
The session opened with the screening of the trailers of both films, after which the team behind Tiger took the stage. The film follows a 35-year-old masseuse whose intensifying conflict with his sister over property ownership pushes him to a breaking point, blurring moral boundaries. The narrative also touches upon challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community, addressing themes of identity, rights and social acceptance.
Director Anshul Chauhan spoke about the artistic and emotional complexities involved in making the film. He noted his initial apprehension about how audiences would receive such a sensitive subject, adding that portraying LGBTQ+ issues as a non-LGBTQ filmmaker required a heightened sense of responsibility, sensitivity and respect for the community.
The media interaction then featured Seaside Serendipity, where Executive Producer Tomomi Yoshimura shared insights into the film’s development and themes. He expressed gratitude for the warm response from Indian audiences, saying their enthusiasm made the screening at IFFI especially meaningful.
Tomomi highlighted the film’s core vision of bridging the generational gap between children and adults. He said the narrative was designed to encourage understanding across age groups, presenting perspectives that resonate with both the young and the old.
Set in a tranquil seaside town, Seaside Serendipity portrays a community of long-time residents whose lives are disrupted by the arrival of artists and a series of unexpected events. Centred around middle-schooler Sosuke and the evolving town itself, the film unfolds through intimate vignettes that explore children’s resolve and adults’ search for meaning. With its portrayal of imperfect but tender characters, the film celebrates love, connection and community — themes the team hopes will continue to resonate with festival audiences.
