Dharmendra | 56th International Film Festival | Rahul Rawail | IFFI

IFFI 2025 pays tribute to legendary actor Dharmendra

The 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) paid a heartfelt tribute to legendary actor Dharmendra today, honouring his contribution to Indian cinema. The festival joined the nation in mourning the loss of one of its most beloved icons, who passed away on Monday.

Noted filmmaker Rahul Rawail remembered Dharmendra as “an iconic actor and an exceptional human being,” urging everyone to celebrate his life while acknowledging the grief of his family. Speaking at the homage, Rawail recalled the actor’s dedication during the filming of Mera Naam Joker, highlighting his gruelling schedule while simultaneously working on Aadmi Aur Insaan.

Rawail also reminisced about the shooting of Betaab (1983), the debut film of Shri Dharmendra’s son, Sunny Deol. He shared how crowds would gather in Kashmir just to see the star, and how Dharmendra would watch his son’s premiere at Bandra’s Gaiety Cinema every evening, discussing the film with Rawail afterward with unflagging enthusiasm.

Describing Dharmendra as a mentor and father figure, Rawail praised his generosity and professionalism, noting that his children continue to carry forward his legacy. He also recounted the deep admiration of fans, including a Delhi police officer who had wished to meet the actor and was moved to connect with Sunny Deol after learning of his father’s passing.

Rawail said, “We’ve lost a great human being. We were fortunate to have lived in times when icons like Dharmendra ji were working.” He thanked IFFI organisers for arranging the special homage.
