India Navy commissions INS Ikshak, advancing self-reliance in naval shipbuilding

The Indian Navy on Thursday commissioned INS Ikshak, the third vessel of the Survey Vessel (Large) class, into active service at a ceremony held at the Naval Base in Kochi.

The SVL-class vessels are designed to conduct hydrographic surveys and gather oceanographic data while also supporting coastal defence and humanitarian operations. Equipped with advanced systems and a deck to operate helicopters, INS Ikshak can be deployed for disaster relief and medical assistance, strengthening India’s maritime preparedness.

Built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), INS Ikshak is also the first SVL-class ship designed with dedicated women’s accommodation, reflecting the Navy’s effort to improve inclusivity. Its induction, Admiral Tripathi said, will enhance India’s hydrographic survey capacity, maritime safety, and national security along key sea lanes.

The event was presided over by Chief of Naval Staff (CNS) Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi. He described INS Ikshak as a symbol of collaboration between the Indian Navy, domestic industries, and MSMEs, calling it an example of the country’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) initiative.

Following the ceremony, Admiral Tripathi toured the ship and interacted with the commissioning crew and GRSE officials, lauding their role in bringing the vessel into service.
