India, New Zealand conclude Fourth Round of FTA Talks; both sides aim for early, balanced agreement

The fourth round of negotiations on the proposed India–New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (FTA) concluded successfully after five days of discussions held in Auckland and Rotorua.

The talks were described as constructive and forward-looking, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to an early, comprehensive, and balanced trade agreement.

Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, and New Zealand’s Minister for Trade, Todd McClay, reviewed the progress achieved during this round and expressed confidence that the proposed FTA would strengthen trade and investment linkages between the two countries.

Delegations from both nations engaged in detailed discussions on key areas, including trade in goods and services, economic cooperation, and rules of origin. The talks reflected a shared ambition to promote resilient, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth.

The Commerce Ministry said the agreement, once finalized, is expected to boost trade flows, enhance supply chain resilience, and offer improved market access and predictability for businesses in both countries.

India’s bilateral merchandise trade with New Zealand stood at USD 1.3 billion in FY 2024–25, recording nearly 49 percent year-on-year growth. The FTA is expected to further expand opportunities in sectors such as agriculture, food processing, renewable energy, pharmaceuticals, education, and services.

Guided by the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India remains focused on deepening economic ties that contribute to global prosperity and secure supply chains, officials said.

Both sides agreed to maintain momentum through inter-sessional work and continue detailed engagements across all negotiation tracks to move swiftly toward an early and mutually beneficial conclusion.
