UN Climate Summit in Brazil

India reaffirms commitment to equitable climate action at UN Climate Summit in Brazil

India has reiterated its commitment to equitable and inclusive climate action based on the principles of equity and Common but Differentiated Responsibilities and Respective Capabilities (CBDR-RC) at the Leaders’ Summit of the UNFCCC COP30 being held in Belém, Brazil.

Delivering India’s National Statement on Friday, Ambassador of India to Brazil, Dinesh Bhatia, underlined the country’s climate action approach that aligns with national circumstances while contributing meaningfully to global efforts. The 30th Conference of Parties (COP30) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change is being held from November 10 to 21, 2025.

India called on developed nations to take the lead in reducing emissions and to deliver on their long-pending commitments of “adequate, predictable and timely” climate finance, technology transfer, and capacity-building support to developing countries.

The statement also welcomed Brazil’s initiative to launch the Tropical Forests Forever Facility (TFFF) — a mechanism aimed at the sustained protection of tropical forests. India joined the initiative as an observer, recognising it as a “significant step towards global forest conservation.”

Highlighting India’s strong record under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, the statement noted that India reduced its emission intensity by 36% between 2005 and 2020 and achieved over 50% non-fossil power capacity — reaching its revised Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) target five years ahead of schedule.

India has created an additional carbon sink of 2.29 billion tonnes of CO₂ equivalent between 2005 and 2021 and emerged as the world’s third-largest producer of renewable energy with nearly 200 GW of installed capacity. Initiatives such as the International Solar Alliance (ISA), which brings together more than 120 countries, were cited as examples of India’s leadership in promoting affordable clean energy and South-South cooperation.

India cautioned that, a decade after the Paris Agreement, the climate ambition of many nations remains insufficient. “While developing countries are taking decisive steps, global ambition continues to fall short,” the statement said, stressing that the remaining carbon budget is rapidly shrinking.

India reaffirmed that climate action must be guided by fairness, inclusivity, and shared responsibility. “Affordable finance, technology access, and capacity-building remain essential to achieve global climate goals,” it said, calling equitable and concessional climate finance the cornerstone of future action.

Reiterating its faith in multilateralism and the framework of the Paris Agreement, India urged all countries to ensure that the coming decade is defined not only by new targets but by effective implementation, resilience, and mutual trust.
