World Fisheries Day 2025

India to celebrate World Fisheries Day in Nov 21 with focus on sustainable growth and seafood exports

The Department of Fisheries, under the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying, will celebrate World Fisheries Day 2025 on November 21 at Sushma Swaraj Bhawan in New Delhi. This year’s theme, “India’s Blue Transformation: Strengthening Value Addition in Seafood Exports,” underscores the country’s commitment to developing marine and freshwater products into high-value, globally competitive commodities.

The inaugural session will feature the virtual presence of Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh (Lalan Singh), along with Ministers of State S.P. Singh Baghel and George Kurian. Delegations from nearly 27 countries are expected to attend in person, reflecting India’s expanding role in the global Blue Economy.

During the event, the Department will unveil the National Framework on Traceability in Fisheries and Aquaculture, establishing a centralized digital system to ensure compliance with domestic and international regulations, promote food safety, enhance sustainability, and improve market access. Key initiatives, including SOPs for mariculture, guidelines for smart and integrated harbours, fish landing centres, reservoir fisheries management, and a compendium of coastal aquaculture, will also be launched.

The event will host two technical sessions: the first on “Enhancing Growth through Value Addition in Fisheries and Aquaculture,” focusing on innovation, diversification, branding, packaging, certification, and infrastructure; followed by a session on “Harnessing Export Potential of Indian Inland States and Union Territories with Focus on Freshwater Fish Species,” featuring insights from eminent experts and stakeholders.
