Janjatiya Gaurav Varsh Pakhwada: Nationwide celebrations honour tribal heroes

The Janjatiya Gaurav Varsh Pakhwada (1st–15th November 2025) began across the country on Saturday, marking the start of a fortnight-long nationwide celebration honouring the valour, vision, and contributions of India’s tribal heroes. The observance is part of the year-long Janjatiya Gaurav Varsh, commemorating the 150th birth anniversary of Bhagwan Birsa Munda, one of India’s most revered tribal freedom fighters and a symbol of resistance against colonial rule.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced the observance to recognise the sacrifices, culture, and heritage of India’s tribal communities and to integrate their inspiring stories into the nation’s collective consciousness. Under his leadership, the Government of India institutionalised Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas on November 15 each year, ensuring that the legacy of Birsa Munda and other tribal leaders continues to inspire future generations.

Union Minister for Tribal Affairs Jual Oram urged all States and Union Territories to celebrate the Pakhwada as a people’s movement, showcasing the rich cultural identity, knowledge systems, and achievements of tribal communities. Across the country, cultural, educational, and community-based programmes have been launched, reflecting a shared spirit of pride and remembrance leading up to Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas.

In Jammu & Kashmir, capacity-building workshops were held on PM JANMAN and Dharti Aaba initiatives, along with digital and financial literacy sessions for Ashram School students. Meghalaya marked the occasion with a vibrant cultural programme at the State Central Library in Shillong, featuring traditional performances and floral tributes to tribal icons.

In Rajasthan, all 31 Eklavya Model Residential Schools organised competitions on tribal freedom fighters and heritage, while in Andhra Pradesh, the state’s Tribal Research Institute hosted a grand cultural carnival highlighting traditional art, dance, and community unity.

In Sikkim, celebrations included workshops for tribal language teachers and youth sports events, while in Manipur, local authorities and communities paid homage to tribal heroes with floral tributes and a cleanliness drive. Odisha organised exhibitions, student programmes, and a special Birsa Munda Pavilion showcasing the life of the tribal leader, alongside a photo exhibition at the Odisha State Tribal Museum.

In Gujarat, a national seminar on the life and legacy of Bhagwan Birsa Munda was held at Ekta Nagar, bringing together over 600 professors, scholars, and tribal leaders.

The Janjatiya Gaurav Varsh Pakhwada aims to celebrate tribal identity, preserve indigenous knowledge, and promote awareness about government initiatives for tribal welfare. Guided by Prime Minister Modi’s vision and Minister Oram’s leadership, the celebrations reaffirm the government’s commitment to building an inclusive and empowered Viksit Bharat.

The two-week celebrations will witness grand events across States and Union Territories to mark Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas, paying tribute to Bhagwan Birsa Munda and the enduring spirit of India’s tribal communities.
