The 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) on Friday conferred the Best Debut Director of Indian Feature Film Award on filmmaker Karan Singh Tyagi for his film Kesari Chapter 2. The award was presented by Dr. L. Murugan, Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs, during the closing ceremony.
The jury noted that the film succeeds in portraying the cinematic value, historical relevance, and compelling moments of the Indian freedom struggle, calling the production a fine blend of visual excellence and powerful storytelling. The jury and the Chairperson of the Indian Panorama congratulated the director, producer, cast, and technical team of Kesari Chapter 2.
Kesari Chapter 2 depicts the true story of Sankaran Nair, a barrister from Kerala who challenged the British Empire over the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre. As a member of the Viceroy’s Council, Nair uncovers evidence pointing to General Dyer’s deliberate firing on unarmed civilians. Alongside a young lawyer, Dilreet Gill, he wages a legal battle demanding accountability and justice. The film portrays Nair’s courage and the inspiration his stand gave to India’s freedom movement through an impactful courtroom drama.
Recognising fresh cinematic voices, the Best Debut Director of Indian Feature Film Award forms part of IFFI’s continued effort to encourage new talent demonstrating creative promise and strong artistic merit. Up to five debut films are selected each year under festival regulations. The award includes a cash prize of ₹5 lakh and a certificate.
Established in 1952, the International Film Festival of India is South Asia’s oldest and largest celebration of cinema.
