Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Wednesday described the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) as a key pillar of nation-building anchored in merit and integrity. He was speaking at the inaugural session of the UPSC’s Shatabdi Sammelan in New Delhi.
Birla said the Commission’s 100-year journey represents a defining chapter in India’s democratic and administrative evolution. “Rooted in merit, transparency and ethical values, the UPSC has inspired millions of young Indians to dedicate themselves to public service,” he said.
As India aims to become a developed and inclusive nation by 2047, Birla noted that the role of UPSC will become even more crucial. He highlighted that in an era shaped by digital technologies and artificial intelligence, the Commission has “set new benchmarks of good governance” by making its selection processes more advanced, scientific and transparent.
The Speaker said the UPSC has strengthened India’s democratic structure by providing equal opportunities to talent from diverse social and geographical backgrounds through a merit-driven system. He added that the Commission’s century-long journey reflects its significant contribution to governance, development and public service delivery across the country, which has reinforced public trust in administrative systems.
Birla said that over the past century, the UPSC has opened pathways for millions of young Indians to serve the nation through knowledge, hard work and ethical conduct. He noted that the institution has ensured representation from India’s social, linguistic and regional diversity within the administrative framework.
Expressing confidence in the Commission’s future role, Birla said the centenary year will “give new energy and direction” to the UPSC as it prepares future generations of public servants who will contribute to building a developed, innovative and globally leading India.
The Speaker extended his greetings to former and current chairpersons, members, officers and all personnel associated with the UPSC.
Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science & Technology and Earth Sciences Jitendra Singh, along with other dignitaries, attended the event. UPSC Chairman Dr. Ajay Kumar delivered the welcome address.
