MEA rolls out upgraded Passport Seva Programme and e-Passports

The Ministry of External Affairs on Wednesday announced the nationwide rollout of its upgraded Passport Seva Programme (PSP V2.0), the Global Passport Seva Programme (GPSP V2.0), and the launch of e-Passports for citizens in India and abroad. The initiative marks a major step in the government’s efforts to modernise passport services and strengthen security through technology-driven solutions.

According to the Ministry, the revamped Passport Seva Programme was implemented across all 37 Passport Offices in India, along with 93 Passport Seva Kendras and 450 Post Office Passport Seva Kendras on May 26, 2025. The Global Passport Seva Programme, designed for Indian missions abroad, was subsequently rolled out on October 28, 2025, across Indian Embassies and Consulates worldwide.

The new system connects all stakeholders involved in passport issuance through a unified digital platform designed to improve efficiency, transparency, and user convenience. It features AI-powered chat and voice bots to assist users with applications and grievances, while a redesigned website and mobile app simplify the process of form submission, document uploads, and payments via UPI or QR codes.

A key component of the upgrade is the introduction of e-Passports, which integrate paper and electronic features. The new passports include an embedded Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chip and antenna to store the holder’s biometric and personal data in line with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards. The MEA said e-Passports will enhance security and authentication, and that all new passports issued will now be electronic, while existing ones will remain valid until expiry.
