The Madhya Pradesh government has announced that Geeta Jayanti will be celebrated across the state with large-scale events on December 1.
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has directed that the occasion be observed in every district, block and village as a festival dedicated to universal wisdom and humanity.
Briefing reporters after the cabinet meeting, Urban Development Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya said the government aims to promote the Bhagavad Gita as a text that transcends religious boundaries. “The Gita is not the scripture of any one faith; it is the eternal guide for entire humanity,” Vijayvargiya stated. He also noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has promoted the Gita globally by gifting copies to world leaders during foreign visits.
According to the government, approximately three lakh devotees will recite verses from the 15th chapter (Purushottama Yoga) of the Shrimad Bhagavad Gita simultaneously across all 313 development blocks in the state’s 55 districts and 10 divisions. Renowned Acharyas from the Shri Krishna tradition will lead these mass recitation programmes at block headquarters, temples and public venues.
A grand state-level ceremony will be organised in Ujjain, where Chief Minister Yadav is expected to attend. Ujjain, home to the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga, will host discourses, bhajans and cultural performances themed around the Gita.
The Madhya Pradesh government is also coordinating with Haryana to ensure representation from the state at the International Gita Mahotsav in Kurukshetra, being held from November 24 to December 1. Delegations of scholars, artists and devotees from Madhya Pradesh are set to participate in the global festival, which draws attendees from more than 30 countries.
Schools and colleges across the state are being encouraged to engage students in activities centred on the Gita. Several districts have announced essay competitions, quizzes and group recitations in educational institutions. Government employees will also be encouraged to read and reflect on the scripture during the week.
According to Vijayvargiya, the state expects the celebrations to foster cultural pride and spiritual awareness among citizens.
