NITI Aayog unveils tech-driven roadmap to revolutionise Indian agriculture

NITI Aayog’s Frontier Tech Hub unveiled a groundbreaking roadmap titled “Reimagining Agriculture: A Roadmap for Frontier Technology Led Transformation” here on Monday, outlining a strategic vision to harness frontier technologies for enhancing productivity, sustainability and farmer incomes across India’s diverse agricultural landscape.

The launch event was graced by Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendrabhai Patel, state ministers Rameshbhai Bhurabhai Katara and Jitubhai Vaghani, NITI Aayog CEO B V R Subrahmanyam, Principal Advisor to Gujarat CM Hasmukh Adhia, Additional Chief Secretary Anju Sharma, Programme Director Neelam Patel, Distinguished Fellow Debjani Ghosh, besides representatives from industry, academia and innovation ecosystems.

The roadmap proposes leveraging technologies such as climate-resilient seeds, digital twins, precision agriculture, agentic AI and advanced mechanisation. It segments farmers into three archetypes—aspiring, transitioning and advanced—to provide tailored solutions addressing challenges from smallholders to commercial cultivators.

With appropriate interventions, it aims to unlock agricultural resilience, inclusive rural prosperity and global competitiveness in agri-tech, contributing to the Viksit Bharat vision by 2047.

Chief Minister Patel said Gujarat is uniquely positioned to lead the transformation through initiatives like the Digital Crop Survey, Digital Agri Farm Registry and i-Khedut portal, which integrate technology to combat crop diseases, boost productivity and reduce cultivation costs. “Farmer sashaktikaran is essential for Viksit Bharat 2047. By harnessing AI, data and precision technologies, we can ensure every acre becomes more productive, every drop of water more valuable and every farmer more prosperous,” he added.

NITI Aayog CEO Subrahmanyam emphasised that no two farmers are alike and technology must reflect this diversity. “The real impact will come from customising solutions for smallholders or commercial cultivators. This roadmap emphasises differentiated strategies for aspiring, transitioning and advanced farmers. Designed with empathy and deployed with precision, technology can transform livelihoods, making agriculture resilient, inclusive and future-ready,” he said.
Debjani Ghosh described agriculture as standing on the brink of a technological renaissance, where progress will be measured in data, intelligence and design.

“The next revolution will be in speed, scale and smart integration, making every farmer a co-creator of this new future,” she added.
Developed in collaboration with BCG, Google and CII under expert guidance from industry and academia, the roadmap saw enthusiastic stakeholder participation.

The NITI Frontier Tech Hub, collaborating with over 100 experts, is developing 10-year roadmaps across more than 20 sectors for transformative growth by 2047.
