Pemmasani reviews measures to curb revenue leakage in Department of Posts

Union Minister of State for Communications and Rural Development, Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar, chaired a high-level review meeting on Friday to assess revenue leakage issues within the Department of Posts (DoP). He urged officials to adopt stronger operational controls and enhanced digital security measures to ensure full accountability across the postal network.

During the review, Pemmasani stressed the need for a technology-backed, multi-layered framework to detect and prevent revenue losses. He recommended focused field audits in high-volume post offices handling over 10,000, 5,000 and 1,000 transactions daily, and instructed officials to integrate weighing machines with postal IT systems to reduce manual errors and prevent under-invoicing.

The Minister also pushed for the rollout of dynamic barcoding and prepaid booking alerts to flag irregular transactions and prevent unauthorised entry of parcels into the delivery chain. Strengthening security, modernising digital systems and motivating staff were essential to ensuring that “every rupee is accounted for”, he said.

Additionally, Pemmasani reviewed the digital and financial security framework of the Postal Savings Bank. He called for stricter safeguards through biometric and OTP-based authentication, quicker Aadhaar and mobile number seeding of accounts, and broader adoption of digital passbooks to improve transparency, minimise manual handling and reduce fraud risks.
