Piyush Goyal experiences world-class mobility tech, sustainable agriculture in Israel

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, during his visit to Israel, explored world-class mobility technology and witnessed community-driven sustainable agriculture.

Following the initiation of Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations between the two countries, Goyal also observed other innovations that India could implement at scale.

“The autonomous drive by @Mobileye in Jerusalem was a perfect blend of precision and engineering. Exciting times ahead for mobility technology,” Goyal said in a post on X, after experiencing autonomous driving on the streets of Jerusalem.

Mobileye, founded in 1999 by Professor Amnon Shashua, evolved from his academic research at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem into a monocular vision system capable of detecting vehicles using only a camera and software algorithms on a processor. Shashua formed a team with two close collaborators, Ziv Aviram and Norio Ichihashi. In 2017, Mobileye was acquired by Intel, after which Shashua assumed the CEO position while Aviram retired.

The company has established multiple industry firsts and pioneered many vision-based Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) functions prevalent today. Mobileye continues to offer a range of autonomous mobility solutions alongside its core ADAS business.

Goyal also toured Kibbutz Ramat Rachel in Jerusalem, describing it as “an inspiring glimpse into community-driven innovation, sustainable agriculture, and cooperative living.”

He highlighted the potential to leverage Israel’s innovations, noting that India has the talent and skill to implement them at scale.

India is seeking a deep partnership with Israel to promote the startup ecosystem for deeptech and high-quality innovations. During his visit to the Peres Center for Peace and Innovation, Goyal said that India aspires to become the startup capital of the world in the coming years.

He also noted Israel’s unique startup ecosystem, with one startup for every 1,000 people, as a model for potential collaboration.
