PM Modi calls for “human-centric” tech, global compact on AI at the third G20 session

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday urged G20 member nations to fundamentally rethink how emerging and critical technologies are developed and deployed.

Addressing the third session of the G20 Summit, themed ‘A Fair and a Just Future for All – Critical Minerals; Decent Work; Artificial Intelligence”, the Prime Minister said technological progress must be “human-centric rather than finance-centric, global rather than national, and rooted in open-source models instead of exclusive systems.” He added that India has already embedded this approach into its tech ecosystem, leading to advances in sectors such as space, artificial intelligence and digital payments.

Highlighting India’s AI strategy, the Prime Minister said the country is focusing on equitable access, population-level skilling and responsible deployment. He noted that the India-AI Mission is expanding high-performance computing capacity to ensure that AI benefits reach every citizen.

PM Modi called for a global AI compact based on transparency, human oversight, safety-by-design and measures to prevent misuse. “AI should augment human capabilities, but the final decisions must remain with humans,” he said.

The PM also announced that India will host the AI Impact Summit in February 2026, under the theme ‘Sarvajanam Hitaya, Sarvajanam Sukhaya’ (Welfare for all, Happiness for all), and invited all G20 members to participate.

In the context of rapid advances in AI, PM Modi stressed the urgency of shifting global focus from “jobs of today” to “capabilities of tomorrow.” Building on the progress made on talent mobility during the New Delhi G20 Summit, he proposed the creation of a Global Framework for Talent Mobility in the coming years.

The Prime Minister reiterated India’s commitment to global well-being. He said India stands for development that is sustainable, trade that is trusted, finance that is fair, and progress that ensures prosperity for all.
