Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday held a vibrant roadshow in Udupi ahead of the Laksha Kantha Gita Parayana programme. Residents lined the streets in large numbers, waving the tricolour and cheering as the Prime Minister’s convoy passed.
The Prime Minister is scheduled to visit the historic Sri Krishna Matha and participate in the Laksha Kantha Gita Parayana – an event where one lakh participants, including students, scholars, monks, and devotees from different walks of life, will recite the Srimad Bhagavad Gita in unison.
During his visit, PM Modi will also inaugurate the Suvarna Teertha Mantapa, situated in front of the Krishna sanctum, and dedicate the Kanaka Kavacha (a golden covering) at the sacred Kanakana Kindi. The window is revered as the spot where saint Kanakadasa is believed to have received a divine vision of Lord Krishna.
Sri Krishna Matha, established over 800 years ago by Sri Madhvacharya – the proponent of the Dvaita philosophy of Vedanta – remains a major spiritual and cultural centre in Karnataka.
Ahead of his visit, the Prime Minister said he felt “honoured” to participate in the devotional gathering.
“This is a special gathering that brings together people from different sections of society for a recital of the Gita. This Matha has a very special significance in our cultural life. Inspired by Sri Madhvacharya, it has been at the forefront of serving society,” PM Modi said in a post on X.
Karnataka Leader of the Opposition, BY Vijayendra, noted the significance of the visit, stating that this is the Prime Minister’s first trip to Udupi since assuming office.
“Laksha Kantha Gita is a very meaningful and auspicious programme organised by Udupi Math. The karyakartas are very charged and eagerly waiting to see the Prime Minister,” he said.
