Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday met South African President Cyril Ramaphosa in Johannesburg on the sidelines of the G20 Summit, thanking him for the hospitality extended and for the successful conduct of the meeting. PM Modi said India appreciated South Africa’s efforts to build on outcomes of the New Delhi G20 Summit.
The two leaders reviewed bilateral cooperation and noted progress in areas such as trade, investment, food security, skill development, mining, youth exchange and people-to-people engagement. They discussed expanding collaboration in artificial intelligence, digital public infrastructure and critical minerals.
PM Modi and Ramaphosa welcomed the increasing presence of Indian companies in South Africa and agreed to support mutual investments, particularly in infrastructure, technology, innovation, mining and start-up sectors. The Prime Minister also thanked Ramaphosa for South Africa’s assistance in relocating cheetahs to India and invited him to join the International Big Cat Alliance. Both leaders agreed to work together to strengthen the collective voice of the Global South.
Prime Minister Modi welcomed South Africa’s initiative to convene an IBSA leaders’ meeting, while Ramaphosa assured full support for India’s BRICS Chairship in 2026.
