President Murmu attends Kumaun University convocation, urges students to dedicate education to nation-building

President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday attended the 20th convocation ceremony of Kumaun University in Nainital, Uttarakhand, where she called upon students to use their education for the betterment of society and the nation.

Addressing the gathering, the President said education is the foundation of national development and must not only enhance intellect and skills but also build moral strength and character. “Education not only makes us self-reliant but also teaches us humility and the importance of contributing to the development of society and the country,” she said.

Urging students to dedicate their knowledge to the service of the underprivileged, President Murmu added that such service represents “the true religion” – one that brings genuine happiness and satisfaction.

Highlighting India’s economic progress, the President noted that the country remains one of the fastest-growing major economies in the world. She said that several government policy initiatives are opening new avenues for youth and urged higher education institutions to help students make the most of these emerging opportunities.

Emphasizing the importance of research, innovation, and entrepreneurship, the President lauded Kumaun University’s commitment to academic excellence. She encouraged the adoption of a multidisciplinary approach to ensure the effective application of education and research.

The President also underlined the need to preserve the fragile Himalayan ecosystem, noting that the region’s life-giving resources must be conserved for future generations. She appreciated the university’s efforts toward environmental protection.

Calling on students and faculty to extend their learning beyond classrooms, President Murmu urged them to engage with nearby villages, understand local challenges, and work toward practical solutions.

Reaffirming India’s vision of becoming a developed nation by 2047, President Murmu said, “Young people like the students of Kumaun University have a significant role to play in achieving this goal. With their talent and dedication, I am confident they will fulfill this responsibility.”

Earlier in the day, the President offered prayers at the Naina Devi Temple and visited the Shri Neem Karoli Baba Ashram at Kainchi Dham.
