President Droupadi Murmu attended the fifth convocation ceremony of the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Delhi in New Delhi on Wednesday, calling on young graduates to contribute to India’s scientific and technological growth with a focus on social welfare. NITs function under the Ministry of Education.
In her address, the President said NIT Delhi has established a strong academic presence in a short span of time and appreciated its emphasis on modern infrastructure and academic excellence. She stated that the institute is preparing students for the future by promoting multidisciplinary learning, innovation, research, collaboration with industries and skill-based training.
The President noted that NIT Delhi has set up a start-up centre to nurture entrepreneurship by providing resources, guidance and networking opportunities to students and faculty. An incubation centre is also coming up to help convert innovative concepts into viable business models. She expressed confidence that these initiatives will strengthen a culture of innovation and self-employment among young professionals.
Speaking about India’s development journey, the President said the country is progressing towards the goal of becoming a developed nation with equal focus on inclusive growth, technological advancement, environmental protection and sustainability. She referred to government initiatives such as Digital India, Make in India, Start-up India, Skill India, Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan and Unnat Bharat Abhiyan as examples of rapid, participatory progress.
The President highlighted that technical institutions like NITs can play an important role in developing model digital villages by creating simple technological solutions, imparting digital skills to local communities and working with industries to enhance rural facilities.
Addressing the graduating students, President Murmu said they are now part of India’s scientific and technological workforce and encouraged them to keep learning, continue research and take risks to develop new technologies. She reminded them that genuine progress is measured not only by innovation but by its positive impact on society. Whether advancing sustainable energy, building accessible technology or crafting solutions for underprivileged communities, she said every effort should help reduce inequalities and bring hope to people’s lives. She expressed confidence that the graduates will make NIT Delhi and the nation proud.
