Amit Shah inaugurates Rs 1,500 crore development works in Ahmedabad, highlights Gujarat’s growth and India’s sports push

Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah on Sunday inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for development projects worth ₹1,500 crore under the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC). Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and other officials were present at the event.

Shah said the Narendra Modi government has made major progress in national security, economy, infrastructure, poverty reduction, and welfare schemes. He added that India’s global standing has improved and that Indian cultural traditions and civilisational values are receiving wider recognition.

Shah urged citizens to work towards successfully hosting the Commonwealth Games 2030 in Ahmedabad. He said Gujarat started the “Khelo Gujarat” initiative during Narendra Modi’s tenure as Chief Minister, which later expanded into the national “Khelo India” programme.

He noted that Ahmedabad now has several modern sports complexes, enabling access to facilities within a five-kilometre radius for most residents. New sports complexes at three locations in Ahmedabad were launched during the event.

Shah said that after assessing sports infrastructure and arrangements in over 70 countries, India was selected to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games. Ahmedabad will also host the 2029 World Police & Fire Games, and the city is being considered for the 2036 Olympic Games. He said the city is expected to become a global sports training hub.

The Home Minister said that under the development works worth ₹1,500 crore, projects worth ₹26 crore were inaugurated, works worth ₹30 crore were launched, and two housing project allotment draws were conducted – making a total of 58 works carried out from a single platform. He said development is taking place across sectors and credited both the central and state governments for the pace of progress.

He highlighted several major projects in Gujarat, including world’s largest renewable energy park; Asia’s largest greenfield city in Dholera; Surat–Chennai Expressway starting from Gujarat; GIFT City, India’s first international financial hub; Ahmedabad–Mumbai bullet train; and upcoming Namo Rapid Rail from Bhuj to Ahmedabad.

Shah said Gujarat is progressing rapidly under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and state minister Harsh Sanghavi.

Shah highlighted that the BJP and NDA have seen continuous electoral victories since the 2024 Lok Sabha polls and said the opposition has been rejected by voters. He dismissed allegations related to EVMs and voter lists, saying the opposition is not able to gain public support.

He predicted that the BJP and its allies would also gain ground in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu.

Shah said the Ram Temple in Ayodhya is now complete, following the groundbreaking in 2019 and consecration in 2024. He added that construction of a temple dedicated to Sita in Bihar has also begun and will be completed by 2026.

Acknowledging Armed Forces Flag Day, Shah paid tribute to soldiers who have lost their lives and urged citizens to continue supporting the welfare of defence personnel.

Highlighting initiatives in his parliamentary constituency, Shah said Gandhinagar’s green cover has increased by 13.6% in the last five years. He urged residents to plant 5 to 50 trees during monsoon and said youth groups should take responsibility for maintaining them.
