Apple’s iPhone 16 becomes highest-selling smartphone in India: Report

US-based tech giant Apple sold around 6.5 million units of the iPhone 16 in India during the first 11 months of 2025, making it the highest-selling smartphone in the country, according to a new report by Counterpoint Research.

The report noted that Apple outpaced its Android rivals during the same period. Notably, the iPhone 15 also featured among the top five best-selling smartphones, underlining Apple’s growing dominance in the Indian market.

According to Counterpoint, Apple’s strong performance reflects a significant shift in consumer behaviour in a market that has traditionally been dominated by entry-level and mid-range devices.

This change has been supported by Apple’s strategic push to expand local manufacturing and reduce its reliance on China. The company recently opened three new Apple Stores in Bengaluru, Pune and Noida, taking its total retail footprint in India to five stores.

Financing options such as no-cost EMIs, cashbacks and bank-linked schemes have also made premium smartphones more accessible to a wider consumer base.

Apple recorded the highest value of iPhone exports from India in November, shipping devices worth $2 billion, according to industry data. Company filings further showed that Apple India posted record domestic sales of $9 billion in FY25, and that one in every five iPhones produced globally during the year was manufactured or assembled in India.

Manufacturing in India accounted for 12 per cent of Apple’s global production value, and the company also began local assembly of high-end Pro and Pro Max models for the first time.

According to company filings, the Americas generated $178.4 billion in revenue in FY25, accounting for nearly 43 per cent of Apple’s global revenue, with a growing share of iPhones supplied from India.
