Australia’s Glenn Maxwell withdraws from IPL 2026 ahead of mini-auction

Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has withdrawn from the 19th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), weeks ahead of the December 16 mini-auction, the cricketer announced on Tuesday.

Maxwell, who was released by Punjab Kings, said he made the decision “with a lot of gratitude” towards the league. “After many unforgettable seasons in the IPL, I’ve decided not to put my name into the auction this year,” he wrote on Instagram.

He added that the IPL had shaped him both as a cricketer and a person, allowing him to play with world-class teammates, represent multiple franchises, and perform in front of passionate fans.

Maxwell last played for Punjab Kings in the 2025 edition under captain Shreyas Iyer, with Ricky Ponting as head coach. A finger injury midway through the tournament ruled him out of the season.

The 36-year-old’s future in the IPL remains uncertain. He follows other high-profile absentees, including Andre Russell, who retired and joined Kolkata Knight Riders’ coaching staff, and Faf du Plessis, who has opted to play in the Pakistan Super League and skip the upcoming IPL auction.
