Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Wednesday extended her gratitude to the people of Delhi after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a victory in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) bypolls.
Taking to X, CM Gupta wrote, “Heartfelt thanks to the citizens of Delhi for giving their invaluable blessings to the Bharatiya Janata Party in the Delhi Municipal Corporation bye-elections.” She said the mandate reflected the “tireless hard work and dedication” of party workers and the organisational strength of the BJP.
Congratulating the winning candidates, she added, “Our government is committed to Delhi’s development and is working non-stop.”
BJP leader Kapil Mishra also celebrated the victory on X, calling it a “resounding” win. He said the results showed that the “corrupt and lying Kejriwal gang” had been rejected by voters, especially in areas like Chandni Chowk and Chandni Mahal. Mishra also credited the leadership of CM Gupta, state BJP president Virendra Sachdeva, and the efforts of party workers for the performance.
Earlier in the day, results for the bypolls held across 12 MCD wards were declared. The BJP won seven seats, while thesecured three. The Congress opened its account wi Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) th a win in Sangam Vihar-A.
Among BJP’s victories, Rekha Rani won from Dichaon Kalan (Ward 128), Sarla Chaudhary from Vinod Nagar (Ward 198), Veena Asija from Ashok Vihar (Ward 65), and Suman Kumar Gupta from Chandni Chowk (Ward 74). Anita Jain clinched the Shalimar Bagh seat, while Anjum Mandal won from Greater Kailash and Manisha Devi from Dwarka B.
The AAP secured wins in Dakshin Puri (Ram Swaroop Kanojia), Mundka (Anil), and Naraina (Rajan Arora).
Congress candidate Suresh Chaudhary emerged victorious in Sangam Vihar Ward 163A, while Mohammad Imran of the All India Forward Bloc won from Chandni Mahal.
The bypolls recorded a voter turnout of 38.51 per cent—lower than the 50.47 per cent turnout seen in the 2022 MCD elections.
Counting was conducted at ten centres across the city, including Kanjhawala, Pitampura, Bharat Nagar, Civil Lines, Rouse Avenue, Dwarka, Najafgarh, Gole Market, Pushp Vihar, and Mandawali. Each centre had dedicated strongrooms and controlled access, the State Election Commission said.
Before the bypolls, the 250-member MCD House comprised 115 BJP councillors, 99 from AAP, 15 from the Indraprastha Vikas Party, and 8 from the Congress. The bypolls were seen as the BJP’s first major electoral test after its recent Assembly victory, while the AAP and Congress viewed the contest as an opportunity to regain ground in the national capital.
