Cold wave grips UP; CM Yogi urges compassion, assures relief measures

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday urged people to remain calm and show compassion towards the vulnerable as a cold wave intensified across northern India, saying the state government was taking urgent steps to mitigate the impact of extreme weather.

In a post on social media platform X, CM Yogi said officials had been directed to adopt a humane approach while implementing relief measures, adding that protecting lives during the harsh winter was a priority.

The UP CM said night shelters across the state were operating at full capacity and had been equipped with quilts, blankets, drinking water, heaters and bonfires. Students and relatives of patients from other districts were also being accommodated, he added.

Municipal bodies and local administrations have been mobilised to distribute woollen clothes and blankets, while bonfires have been set up at public locations. Special arrangements have also been made at cow shelters to protect animals from the cold.

Adityanath said additional personnel had been deployed on roads to address safety concerns caused by dense fog, and awareness campaigns were being conducted to prevent accidents.

The chief minister also appealed to citizens to assist those working outdoors, including domestic helpers and sanitation workers.

Several parts of Uttar Pradesh have reported dense fog and falling temperatures in recent days. The India Meteorological Department said minimum temperatures in cities such as Ayodhya and Moradabad fell to around 8–9 degrees Celsius.
