President Droupadi Murmu on Friday said that ensuring dignity, security and better growth opportunities for the tribal communities of Manipur, along with their increased participation in national progress, remains a national priority.
Addressing a public function in Senapati district, the President also laid foundation stones and inaugurated several development projects in the district. She is on a two-day (December 11-12) visit to Manipur.
President Murmu said the central government is working closely with local leaders, civil society groups and communities to promote inclusive and sustainable development in Manipur, particularly in remote tribal regions. In recent years, she said, the hill districts have seen focused investments in road and bridge connectivity, healthcare, education, drinking water and electricity supply. Skill training, self-help groups and Van Dhan initiatives are also helping improve livelihoods.
President Murmu emphasised that Manipur’s strength lies in its cultural and tribal diversity, noting that the hills and the valley “have always complemented each other.” She urged all communities to continue supporting efforts for peace, understanding and reconciliation.
The President highlighted the unique cultural contribution of the Maram tribe – the only Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG) in Manipur – and said that the community deserves focused support. She noted that several initiatives under the PM JANMAN Mission are aimed at improving healthcare, education, housing, livelihood and infrastructure for PVTGs and other remote tribal groups.
President Murmu also expressed confidence that the newly inaugurated projects and foundation stone–laid institutions would strengthen education, security, healthcare and community infrastructure, bringing essential services closer to remote areas.
Earlier in the day, the President paid homage to the women warriors of Manipur at the Nupee Lal Memorial Complex in Imphal. The visit coincided with Nupee Lal Memorial Day, which commemorates the women-led uprisings against British and feudal authorities.
Reiterating the Centre’s commitment to Manipur, President Murmu said the aspirations and concerns of the people were fully recognised. “Let us continue working together for a peaceful and prosperous Manipur,” she concluded.
