Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday extended greetings to people across the country on the occasion of Gita Jayanti, describing Shrimad Bhagavad Gita as a divine scripture whose timeless teachings on duty and selfless action continue to guide humanity.
In a post on X, PM Modi said, “Heartfelt greetings to my family members across the country on the sacred day of ‘Gita Jayanti’ associated with the advent of the Shrimad Bhagavad Gita. This divine scripture, adorned with invaluable messages on the fulfillment of duty, has held an extremely distinctive place in Indian family, social, and spiritual life. Its divine verses will continue to inspire every generation towards selfless action. Jai Shri Krishna!”
Gita Jayanti is observed annually on Ekadashi, the 11th day of the waxing moon in the Hindu month of Margashirsha. The day is also celebrated as Mokshada Ekadashi.
Traditionally, devotees commemorate the occasion with recitation of the Gita, meditation, and worship. They wake early, bathe, wear clean clothes, and perform puja dedicated to Lord Krishna. Many recite selected chapters or the full 700 verses of the scripture. This is followed by mantra chanting, aarti, and distribution of prasad. Evening prayers are also considered auspicious.
According to Hindu scriptures, it was on this day that Lord Krishna imparted the knowledge of Dharma, Karma, and Moksha to Arjuna – teachings that remain central to the scripture.
