Fake news a threat to democracy, says I&B Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw

Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Wednesday told the Lok Sabha that the challenge posed by fake news and AI-generated deepfakes is a “very serious matter” and warned that misinformation threatens India’s democratic framework.

Responding to a question in Parliament, the Minister said that social media platforms have become home to certain “ecosystems” that neither follow the Constitution nor comply with laws enacted by Parliament. He stressed the need for stricter action, stronger rules and enhanced accountability.

Vaishnaw informed the House that the Government has recently introduced new rules, including a provision mandating takedown of flagged content within 36 hours. A draft rule to identify and curb AI-driven deepfakes has also been published, and consultations with stakeholders are underway, he added.

The Minister appreciated the Parliamentary Committee for presenting a detailed report with key recommendations to strengthen the legal framework. He thanked committee chairperson Nishikant Dubey and other members for their work.

Highlighting the balance between freedom of speech and the need to protect democracy, Vaishnaw said the Government is working “with full sensitivity” to maintain this equilibrium. He also underlined that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, the Digital India initiative has transformed access to technology and empowered citizens.

The Minister said social media has become an important platform for public participation but emphasised that institutions and public trust must be strengthened to safeguard society from the risks posed by misinformation.
