AI adoption in India | generative AI at workplace | AI productivity impact

India emerges as global leader in workplace AI adoption: EY

India is among the world’s highest adopters of artificial intelligence, with 62 per cent of employees regularly using generative AI (GenAI) at work, while 90 per cent of employers and 86 per cent of employees believe AI has a positive impact on productivity, according to a report released on Monday.

The findings are based on the ‘EY 2025 Work Reimagined Survey’, which shows that 75 per cent of employees and 72 per cent of employers believe GenAI enhances decision-making. Additionally, 82 per cent of employees and 92 per cent of employers say AI positively affects the quality of work.

The report places India at the forefront of AI adoption globally, with the country scoring 53 points on the ‘AI Advantage’ index, a metric developed to measure AI’s real-world impact at work by assessing time saved by employees. The global average AI Advantage score stands at 34.

Now in its sixth edition, the survey draws insights from 15,000 employees and 1,500 employers across 29 global markets. In India, the study surveyed 800 employees and 50 employers, highlighting a strong ecosystem that supports employee engagement and resilience amid rapid AI adoption.

India also recorded the highest ‘Talent Health’ score of 82 among all geographies assessed. The Talent Health index measures employee sentiment across culture, rewards, and development — key pillars of workforce well-being.

In comparison, the global average Talent Health score is 65 out of 100, with culture contributing 44 per cent, rewards 32 per cent, and development 24 per cent, the report noted.

“India has made strong strides in AI adoption, and organisations are taking a more intentional approach to balancing productivity, skills, and employee experience,” said Anurag Malik, Partner and National Leader – People Consulting, EY India. He added that while technology, including AI, is reshaping how work is done, its true value lies in strengthening talent capability, workforce resilience, and overall employee health.

The survey also examined perceptions around AI governance, with 94 per cent of employers and 89 per cent of employees reporting high levels of confidence in ethical and responsible AI practices.

However, despite 87 per cent of employees and 90 per cent of employers in India agreeing that learning new skills is essential, actual investment in AI training remains limited. Most employees globally spend fewer than 40 hours a year on AI-related learning.
