The Ministry of External Affairs on Wednesday summoned Bangladesh’s High Commissioner to India, Riaz Hamidullah, and conveyed New Delhi’s serious concerns over the deteriorating security situation in Bangladesh, particularly threats to the Indian Mission in Dhaka.
According to the MEA, the High Commissioner was apprised of reports indicating that certain extremist elements have announced plans to create a security situation around the Indian diplomatic premises. India rejected what it described as a “false narrative” being propagated by extremist groups in connection with recent incidents in Bangladesh and expressed disappointment over the interim government’s failure to conduct a thorough investigation or share credible evidence with India.
Reiterating India’s close and friendly ties with the people of Bangladesh, rooted in the 1971 Liberation War and strengthened through development cooperation and people-to-people exchanges, New Delhi said it supports peace and stability in the neighbouring country. India also underlined its consistent call for free, fair, inclusive and credible elections in Bangladesh, conducted in a peaceful environment.
The MEA said India expects the interim government in Dhaka to ensure the safety and security of diplomatic Missions and Posts in accordance with its international obligations.
