India Surges Ahead as Global Solar Leader, Crosses 129 GW Solar Capacity

India has emerged as a global clean-energy leader, with solar capacity reaching 129 GW and non-fossil electricity capacity exceeding 259 GW, accounting for more than half of the country’s total installed power capacity. This milestone marks a significant shift toward a low-carbon energy system.

The 8th Assembly of the International Solar Alliance (ISA) in New Delhi brought together over 550 delegates and more than 30 ministers from 125+ countries. The Assembly reaffirmed commitments to resilient supply chains, solar finance, and inclusive access to renewable energy.

President Droupadi Murmu emphasized that solar energy represents empowerment and inclusive development. The Assembly introduced a “no one left behind” approach, targeting women, farmers, villages, and small island nations.

India’s progress is driven by the Panchamrit commitments—500 GW non-fossil capacity, 50% clean-energy share, 1 billion tonnes emissions reduction, 45% lower carbon intensity, and net-zero by 2070. These goals anchor the country’s long-term climate roadmap.
Solar capacity has grown more than 40-fold in a decade, rising from 3 GW in 2014 to nearly 130 GW in 2025. IRENA’s 2025 rankings place India 3rd in solar, 4th in wind, and 4th globally in renewable capacity.

Government schemes are accelerating the transition. The PM Surya Ghar mission has enabled 23.9 lakh households to install rooftop solar, producing 7 GW of clean energy, supported by ₹13,464 crore in subsidies.

Under the National Solar Mission, ground-mounted plants account for 98.72 GW, rooftop systems 22.42 GW, hybrid projects 3.32 GW, and off-grid systems 5.45 GW, reinforcing India’s 2030 targets.

The Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme has attracted ₹52,900 crore in investment and generated 44,400 jobs by September 2025, boosting domestic manufacturing of high-efficiency solar modules.

Agriculture-focused solarisation under PM-KUSUM continues to expand. More than 9 lakh standalone solar pumps and over 9.7 lakh feeder-level pumps have been solarized as of October 2025, with the scheme extended to March 2026.

Large-scale deployment is supported by 55 approved solar parks with a sanctioned capacity of 39,973 MW. Of these, 14,922 MW is already operational, with the scheme extended to 2029.

India’s global leadership is reinforced through initiatives like One Sun, One World, One Grid (OSOWOG) and participation in Mission Innovation and the Clean Energy Ministerial. The IEA calls India a “major driving force in global energy trends.”

With expanding capacity, stronger supply chains, and inclusive policies, India is charting a path toward a resilient, sustainable, and globally influential solar-powered future.
