India will take over the chairmanship of International IDEA in December 2026, marking a global recognition of its electoral framework and democratic processes.
The current Chief Election Commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar, is slated to formally assume the chair on December 3, 2026, representing India on behalf of the Election Commission of India.
Instituted in 1995, International IDEA is an inter-governmental organisation committed to promoting democracy and electoral assistance worldwide. It comprises 35 member countries alongside observers such as the United States and Japan.
India, a founding member of International IDEA, has long contributed to electoral research, capacity building and training initiatives under the body’s umbrella. The ECI’s elevation to the chairmanship reflects global appreciation of India’s experience in conducting free, fair and transparent elections across a vast electorate.
With more than 90 crore registered voters, India — as the world’s largest democracy — is expected to bring substantial practical insight to the helm of International IDEA. The chairmanship offers New Delhi an opportunity to influence electoral norms, share best practices and support election management bodies globally.
International IDEA also enjoys observer status in the United Nations General Assembly since 2003, giving it a significant global platform. As chair, India will steer initiatives seeking to strengthen democratic institutions and electoral systems worldwide.
