MoD signs ₹4,666 crore defence contracts for carbines and torpedoes

The Ministry of Defence on Tuesday signed contracts worth ₹4,666 crore for the procurement of Close Quarter Battle (CQB) Carbines and Heavy Weight Torpedoes to strengthen the operational capabilities of the Indian Armed Forces.

The agreements were signed in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh at South Block in New Delhi.

Under the first contract, over 4.25 lakh CQB Carbines along with accessories, valued at ₹2,770 crore, will be procured for the Indian Army and the Indian Navy. The contracts were signed with Bharat Forge Limited and PLR Systems Private Limited.

The CQB Carbines are designed to enhance the lethality of soldiers in close combat situations, with a compact structure and high rate of fire suited for operations in confined spaces. The induction of these weapons will replace older systems currently in service and aligns with the Government’s focus on indigenisation under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

The project is also expected to support domestic defence manufacturing, including participation of micro, small and medium enterprises in component production and raw material supply, contributing to employment generation and industrial growth.

In a separate agreement, the Ministry signed a contract worth approximately ₹1,896 crore with WASS Submarine Systems S.R.L. for the procurement and integration of 48 Heavy Weight Torpedoes for the Indian Navy’s Kalvari Class Submarines under Project-75.

The torpedoes will enhance the combat capabilities of the six Kalvari Class submarines. Deliveries are scheduled to begin from April 2028 and are expected to be completed by early 2030.

According to the Ministry, the torpedoes are equipped with advanced technological features and will meet the Navy’s operational requirements for modern underwater warfare.

The Ministry of Defence said that during the financial year 2025–26, it has signed capital acquisition contracts worth ₹1.82 lakh crore as part of the ongoing modernisation of the Armed Forces.
