Mumbai’s Metro Line-3, also known as the Aqua Line, will operate throughout the night on January 1, 2026, to facilitate safe and convenient travel for commuters celebrating New Year’s Eve, the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) announced.
According to MMRC, the special extended night service will begin after 10:30 pm on December 31, 2025, and continue until 5:55 am on January 1, 2026. Regular metro services will resume from 5:55 am onwards on January 1.
The initiative is aimed at ensuring uninterrupted connectivity during the festive period, enabling citizens to enjoy New Year celebrations without travel-related concerns. MMRC has urged passengers to plan their journeys in advance.
On October 8, Mumbai Metro Line-3—also known as the Colaba–Bandra–SEEPZ corridor—became fully operational, marking a major milestone in the city’s urban transport network. The 33.5-km underground corridor, developed with Japanese funding through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), now connects Aarey in the north to Cuffe Parade in south Mumbai.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the final stretch between Acharya Atre Chowk and Cuffe Parade stations at an event held at Navi Mumbai International Airport. The ceremony was attended by Japan’s Ambassador to India ONO Keiichi, Maharashtra Governor Acharya Devvrat, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu, and Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, among others.
Describing the underground metro as “a living symbol of a developing Bharat,” Prime Minister Modi praised engineers and workers for successfully executing the project in Mumbai’s densely populated urban environment while safeguarding heritage structures.
Implemented by the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL), the project received Japanese Official Development Assistance (ODA) loans worth JPY 354,132 million, against a total project cost of JPY 680,692 million. It is Mumbai’s first fully underground metro system and connects key locations such as Bandra-Kurla Complex, Dharavi, Mumbai International Airport, and MIDC.
