Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday expressed grief over the passing of Tripura Legislative Assembly Speaker Biswa Bandhu Sen, remembering him for his contribution to the state’s development and commitment to public service.
In a post on X, the Prime Minister said, “Pained by the passing of Shri Biswa Bandhu Sen Ji, Speaker of the Tripura Assembly. He will be remembered for his efforts to boost Tripura’s progress and commitment to numerous social causes. My thoughts are with his family and admirers in this sad hour. Om Shanti.”
Sen passed away on Friday morning after undergoing treatment for several months at a private hospital in Bengaluru. He was 72 and is survived by his wife, a son, and a daughter. He had been serving as the 11th Speaker of the Tripura Legislative Assembly since June 21, 2018. Sen suffered a brain haemorrhage on August 8 at Agartala railway station and was initially treated in Agartala before being shifted to Bengaluru for advanced medical care.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also expressed condolences. “The demise of Biswa Bandhu Sen Ji the Speaker of the Tripura Legislative Assembly is deeply saddening. A committed leader who dedicated several years of his life to public service, Sen Ji’s passing away is a grave loss to the state’s political arena. My thoughts are with his bereaved family, friends, and admirers. Om Shanti Shanti Shanti,” said Shah.
Union Health Minister and BJP President J.P. Nadda said Sen worked closely with the people and made valuable contributions to Tripura’s progress, adding that his service would be remembered with respect.
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha termed Sen’s death an irreparable loss for the state. He said that Sen discharged his responsibilities as Speaker with fairness and efficiency and conducted Assembly proceedings with competence. The Chief Minister extended condolences to Sen’s family and prayed for strength for them during the difficult time.
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla said Sen would be remembered for his selfless service to the people. BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra said Sen played an important role in strengthening the party at the grassroots level and remained committed to public welfare.
As a mark of respect, the Tripura government has declared three days of state mourning from December 26 to 28. During this period, the national flag will be flown at half-mast across the state and no official entertainment programmes will be held. Government offices, public sector undertakings and educational institutions remained closed on Friday. A state funeral will be accorded to Sen on Saturday.
