Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday highlighted the efforts of a young entrepreneur from Manipur, Moirangthem Seth, who has helped bring solar power to hundreds of households in the state, during his monthly radio address Mann Ki Baat.
Referring to Seth’s work, the Prime Minister said the initiative demonstrated how local solutions could address long-standing challenges such as lack of electricity in remote areas. “There is an old saying: where there is a will, there is a way. A young man from Manipur has shown this through his work,” PM Modi said.
The PM noted that parts of Manipur face persistent power shortages, and that Seth identified solar energy as a viable alternative given the region’s favourable conditions for renewable power generation. According to the Prime Minister, the initiative has helped bring electricity to hundreds of homes through the installation of solar panels.
Prime Minister Modi said the impact of the effort has gone beyond household electrification, contributing to improvements in healthcare and livelihoods. “Several health centres in Manipur are now receiving power through solar energy,” he said.
The PM added that the initiative has also benefited women, fishermen and local artisans by improving access to reliable electricity.
The Prime Minister also referred to the Centre’s flagship PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, under which households are provided financial assistance of around Rs 75,000 to Rs 80,000 for installing rooftop solar panels.
Under the scheme, households can receive up to 300 units of free electricity per month, with subsidies transferred directly to beneficiaries’ bank accounts. Excess power generated can also be sold back to the grid.
PM Modi said initiatives like that of Moirangthem Seth complement the government’s broader push towards renewable energy and energy self-reliance.
