PM Modi to Visit Assam on Dec 20–21, launch ₹15,600-crore development projects

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Assam on December 20 and 21, during which he will inaugurate and lay the foundation stone of development projects worth around ₹15,600 crore, according to an official statement.

On December 20, the Prime Minister is scheduled to arrive in Guwahati at around 3 pm, where he will inaugurate the new terminal building of Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi International Airport and address a public gathering. The new integrated terminal, spread over nearly 1.4 lakh square metres, has been designed to handle up to 1.3 crore passengers annually and is supported by major upgrades to runway, apron and airfield infrastructure.

The terminal, India’s first nature-themed airport facility, draws inspiration from Assam’s biodiversity and cultural heritage under the theme “Bamboo Orchids”. It incorporates extensive use of locally sourced bamboo, Kaziranga-inspired landscaping, japi motifs, rhino symbolism and orchid-themed architectural elements. A “Sky Forest” with nearly one lakh indigenous plants has also been created to provide passengers with a distinctive arrival experience. Advanced passenger-friendly features such as DigiYatra-enabled contactless travel, automated baggage handling, full-body scanners and AI-driven airport operations have been integrated to enhance efficiency and security.

On December 21, the Prime Minister will pay tribute to the martyrs of the historic Assam Movement at Swahid Smarak Kshetra in Boragaon, Guwahati. He will later travel to Namrup in Dibrugarh district to perform the bhoomi pujan for the Ammonia-Urea Fertilizer Project of Assam Valley Fertilizer and Chemical Company Limited.

The fertilizer project, to be developed at an estimated cost of over ₹10,600 crore within the existing premises of Brahmaputra Valley Fertilizer Corporation Limited, aims to meet the fertilizer requirements of Assam and neighbouring states.
