PM Modi to visit Jordan; economic ties and trade cooperation in focus

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will undertake a bilateral visit to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan from December 15 to 16 at the invitation of King Abdullah II bin Al Hussein, marking his first full-fledged bilateral engagement with the country.

The visit coincides with the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between India and Jordan and comes amid sustained high-level political engagement between New Delhi and Amman.

Economic cooperation is expected to be a key focus of the visit, with India and Jordan sharing strong and steadily expanding trade ties. India has emerged as Jordan’s third-largest trading partner, with bilateral trade valued at approximately USD 2.8 billion.

Jordan is a major supplier of fertilisers to India, particularly phosphates and potash, which are critical for India’s agricultural sector. A flagship example of this partnership is the Jordan India Fertilizer Company (JIFCO), an USD 860 million joint venture between India’s IFFCO and the Jordan Phosphates Mines Company, established to produce phosphoric acid for export to India, contributing to India’s food security.

Indian investments in Jordan include around 15 garment manufacturing companies of Indian origin, with cumulative investments of nearly USD 500 million. These firms operate in Jordan’s Qualified Industrial Zones and export finished products to global markets, leveraging Jordan’s free trade agreements and preferential access to the United States, Europe and the wider Arab region.

Connectivity between the two countries has improved with Royal Jordanian launching direct flights between Amman and Mumbai, with plans to expand services to New Delhi. Jordan also offers visa-on-arrival and e-visa facilities to Indian travellers, facilitating business and tourism exchanges.

Jordan is also viewed as an important partner in the proposed India–Middle East–Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), where it is expected to serve as a strategic land bridge linking key regional markets.
