President Droupadi Murmu on Sunday presented the National Energy Conservation Awards 2025 and prizes of the National Painting Competition on Energy Conservation in New Delhi on the occasion of National Energy Conservation Day.
Addressing the gathering, the President said that energy conservation is the most environmentally friendly and reliable source of energy, stressing that it is no longer an option but a critical necessity of the present time. She underlined that conserving energy does not merely mean using less, but using it wisely, responsibly and efficiently.
The President said that avoiding unnecessary use of electrical appliances, adopting energy-efficient devices, using natural light and ventilation, and embracing solar and other renewable energy sources help reduce carbon emissions while contributing to clean air, safe water and a balanced ecosystem. Every unit of energy saved, she said, reflects responsibility towards nature and future generations.
Emphasising the role of youth, President Murmu said that awareness and active participation of children and young people are essential to achieving energy conservation goals and ensuring sustainable development of the country.
She noted that access to affordable and clean energy empowers communities, stimulates local economies and creates new growth opportunities. Green energy, she said, is not limited to electricity generation but is a powerful instrument for empowerment and inclusive development.
The President expressed satisfaction over government initiatives such as the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana and the National Green Hydrogen Mission, which are reducing dependence on fossil fuels. She also highlighted measures like the Renewable Consumption Obligation and Production Linked Incentive schemes aimed at promoting renewable energy adoption and energy efficiency.
Referring to India’s progress, she said that energy efficiency efforts in 2023–24 resulted in savings of 53.60 million tonnes of oil equivalent, leading to significant economic benefits and substantial reductions in carbon dioxide emissions.
The President stressed that participation of every sector and citizen is vital for the success of India’s energy transition. She said behavioural change is crucial for bringing energy efficiency across all sectors and linked this approach to India’s cultural ethos of living in harmony with nature, reflected in the global message of “Lifestyle for Environment (LiFE)”.
Appreciating stakeholders working in the field of energy conservation, President Murmu said their contributions would help ensure a healthy and secure future for coming generations. She expressed confidence that with collective responsibility, partnership and public participation, India would continue to play a leading role in energy conservation and move steadily towards a green future.
