National Handicrafts Awards | President Droupadi Murm

President Murmu presents National Handicrafts Awards for 2023 and 2024

President Droupadi Murmu presented the National Handicrafts Awards for the years 2023 and 2024 at an event held in New Delhi today.

Addressing the gathering, the President said that art preserves memories of the past, reflects the present and symbolises aspirations for the future. For centuries, human emotions have found expression through painting, sculpture and craft, she noted, adding that art connects people to their cultural roots and to each other.

President Murmu said the continued vibrancy of India’s handicraft tradition is a testament to the dedication and skill of artisans who have carried forward their craft across generations. While adapting to changing times, they have preserved the essence, soul and “fragrance of the country’s soil” in every creation, she said.

Emphasising the socio-economic importance of the handicraft sector, the President said that it employs more than 3.2 million people, most of whom live in rural and remote areas. The sector supports inclusive growth by decentralising income and employment opportunities, she said.

The President underlined that handicrafts are closely linked to social empowerment. The sector has traditionally supported weaker sections and has played a major role in women’s empowerment — with women forming 68% of its workforce. Along with livelihood, artisans also earn dignity and recognition through their craft, she added.

Describing handicrafts as eco-friendly and rooted in natural, local resources, the President said the sector holds strong potential in a world increasingly conscious of sustainability and low-carbon lifestyles.

President Murmu expressed satisfaction that Geographical Indication (GI) tags are helping Indian craft products gain global identity. She encouraged artisans and stakeholders to pursue GI registration to strengthen credibility and market value. She also noted that the One District One Product (ODOP) initiative is boosting international recognition of regional crafts.

The President highlighted that Indian handicraft products, built on knowledge refined over generations, enjoy strong global demand. She called upon young entrepreneurs and designers to leverage opportunities in the sector and build successful enterprises.
