President Murmu to confer Handicrafts Awards on December 9

The Textiles Ministry will present the Handicrafts Awards for the years 2023 and 2024 on December 9, during the National Handicrafts Week observed annually from December 8 to 14, at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi. The awards, which honour outstanding master craftspersons from across the country, are being held as part of National Handicrafts Week.

President Droupadi Murmu will confer the awards as the Chief Guest. Union Minister of Textiles Giriraj Singh will preside over the event, while Minister of State for Textiles and External Affairs Pabitra Margherita will be the Guest of Honour.

The honours include the prestigious Shilp Guru Awards and the National Awards. The Shilp Guru Awards, instituted in 2002, represent the highest recognition in the handicrafts sector and are given to artisans who have demonstrated exceptional skill, innovation, and contribution to preserving India’s craft traditions. The National Awards, established in 1965, acknowledge exemplary craftsmanship across diverse handicraft forms.

National Handicrafts Week celebrates India’s artisan community and the cultural significance of traditional crafts. The week features exhibitions, workshops, panel discussions, demonstrations, and outreach activities aimed at promoting awareness and supporting artisan livelihoods.

According to Textiles ministry, handicrafts sector remains a key part of India’s cultural and economic fabric, providing employment to millions – particularly in rural and semi-urban areas – and contributing to export earnings. The ministry said it continues to focus on recognition, skill development, technology support, financial empowerment, and improved market access to strengthen artisan communities and sustain India’s craft heritage.
