President Droupadi Murmu paid tributes to the brave soldiers whose courage and sacrifice secured India’s historic victory in the 1971 war, as the nation marked Vijay Diwas on Monday.

In a post on X, the President said, “On the occasion of Vijay Diwas, I pay my humble respects to the brave sons of Mother India. Their courage, valor, and unparalleled devotion to the motherland have always filled the nation with pride. Their heroism and patriotism will continue to inspire the people of the country.”

“The Indian Army’s ‘Empowerment through Indigenization’ initiative reflects a commitment to being prepared for future challenges. In Operation Sindoor, the army has demonstrated self-reliance, strategic resolve, and the effective use of modern warfare techniques, which serves as an inspiration for the entire nation. I extend my best wishes to all soldiers and their families. Jai Hind!,” added President Murmu.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also paid homage to the Armed Forces on the occasion.

In a post on X, PM Modi said Vijay Diwas is a reminder of the bravery and sacrifice of soldiers whose steadfast resolve ensured India’s decisive victory in 1971. He described the day as a salute to their valour and unmatched spirit, which continues to inspire generations of Indians.

Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan recalled that on December 16, 1971, the valour of the Indian Armed Forces led to a decisive victory against Pakistan, resulting in the creation of independent Bangladesh and reshaping the region’s geopolitical landscape. He said the war reaffirmed India’s commitment to justice and freedom and showcased the professionalism of the Army, Navy and Air Force. On the 54th Vijay Diwas, he paid homage to the bravehearts who placed the nation above self.

Amit Shah said the victory of 1971, achieved through indomitable courage and precise strategy, forced the surrender of the Pakistani army and stood as a shield against injustice and oppression. He described the triumph as an example to the world of defending humanity and demonstrating the unparalleled military capability and valour of the Indian Armed Forces.

Rajnath Singh said the nation bows in pride and gratitude to the Armed Forces for the decisive victory of 1971, noting that the Army, Navy and Air Force operated in flawless coordination to reshape history and assert India’s strategic resolve. He said their valour, discipline and combat spirit continue to strengthen the country’s national will.

Singh also remembered Param Vir Chakra awardee 2nd Lt Arun Khetarpal on his Balidan Diwas, recalling his supreme sacrifice and indomitable courage during the 1971 war, which, he said, remain a timeless inspiration for the nation.

Vijay Diwas, observed annually on December 16, commemorates India’s victory in the 1971 war. The surrender of Pakistan’s Eastern Command stands as a testament to the bravery, coordination and supreme sacrifice of the Indian Armed Forces, which led to the liberation of Bangladesh.
