The Ministry of External Affairs on Friday reiterated India’s support for the Gaza Peace Plan and said that regional and international matters will form part of the discussions during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to Jordan and Oman.
Briefing the media on the visit, Secretary (CPV & OIA) Arun Kumar Chatterjee said that India’s ties with both countries carry their own strategic weight and that the leaders are expected to exchange views on issues of mutual interest. He added that specific topics will be clearer after the meetings conclude.
Secretary (South) Meena Malhotra said India’s position on Gaza has been consistent, recalling the country’s participation in the Sharm El-Sheikh Summit on Gaza. She said India welcomed the signing of the first phase of the Gaza Peace Plan and supports all efforts aimed at establishing lasting peace.
On the Prime Minister’s scheduled visit to Ethiopia, Malhotra noted that the country is an important partner in Africa and hosts the headquarters of the African Union. She said India continues to work with African partners to organise the next edition of the India-Africa Summit.
The briefing comes days after Prime Minister Modi spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, during which the two leaders discussed the situation in West Asia. The Prime Minister’s Office said the leaders reviewed strategic cooperation and that India reaffirmed support for early implementation of the Gaza Peace Plan.
Prime Minister Modi will visit Jordan from December 15 to 17, marking his first bilateral visit to the country. He will meet King Abdullah II to review bilateral relations and exchange views on regional developments. The three-nation tour will conclude in Oman from December 17 to 18, his second visit to the Sultanate after 2018.
