Snowfall recorded in Kashmir as Chillai Kalan begins

Heavy snowfall ends a 40-day dry spell as Chillai Kalan, the harshest winter period marked by extreme cold and frequent snowfall, begins in the region-getty images

Snowfall in the higher reaches and rain in the plains of the Kashmir Valley over the past 24 hours ended a three-month-long dry spell on Monday, as the 40-day harsh winter period, locally known as Chillai Kalan, began on a positive note.

The Gulmarg ski resort received nearly nine inches of snowfall during the last 24 hours, draping the destination in a pristine white blanket. Skiers, Christmas and New Year revellers, along with stakeholders from the tourism sector, had been eagerly awaiting the season’s first snowfall.

The hill stations of Sonamarg and Pahalgam also received their first snowfall of the season during the same period, raising hopes among hoteliers and tour and travel operators of an increase in tourist arrivals over the next two to three days.

Farmers and orchardists have heaved a sigh of relief, as the prolonged dry spell had threatened not only the Rabi crop but also the prospects of a good fruit season next year.

Snowfall during Chillai Kalan traditionally replenishes perennial water reservoirs in the mountains, which sustain rivers, streams, lakes and springs across Jammu and Kashmir during the summer months.

Pulmonologists said the rain and snow are expected to improve air quality in the Valley, bringing relief to people suffering from breathing problems and other chest-related ailments.

A Meteorological (MeT) Department official said that light to moderate rain or snow may occur at scattered places across the Union Territory over the next 24 hours, though with milder intensity and intermittent spells.

In the Jammu region, Jammu city and Katra town recorded minimum temperatures of 10.4 degrees Celsius, Batote 6.5 degrees, Banihal 2.4 degrees and Bhaderwah 2.2 degrees.

The Srinagar–Leh highway and the Mughal Road have been closed to traffic, while movement has also been suspended on Sinthan Pass in Anantnag, Razdan Pass in Bandipora and Sadna Top in Kupwara.
