In a step toward making competitive examinations more accessible, the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has announced that all Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD) will now be assured their preferred examination centre. The decision aims to remove logistical hurdles often faced by PwBD candidates and ensure a more inclusive and convenient examination experience.
UPSC Chairman Dr. Ajay Kumar said the move follows an analysis of centre allocation trends from the past five years. Certain high-demand centres – such as Delhi, Cuttack, Patna and Lucknow – tend to fill up rapidly, often forcing PwBD candidates to choose alternative locations that may be difficult to access. “I am pleased that, with this decision, every PwBD candidate will now be assured of their preferred centre, ensuring maximum convenience and ease while appearing for UPSC examinations,” he said.
To implement the initiative, the Commission has developed a three-step strategy: existing centre capacity will first be allocated to both PwBD and non-PwBD candidates; once a centre reaches full capacity, it will no longer be available for non-PwBD candidates, while PwBD candidates will still be able to select it; and UPSC will create additional capacity as needed, ensuring that no PwBD applicant is denied their chosen centre.
